Chapel Stories: Mizue Fells

Mizue Fells

Hello, my name is Mizue Fells. I graduated from 萌妹社区 College in 1979, and I came back as faculty in 1984.

My biggest memory is the time the campus pastor was talking about God’s wrath and God’s judgment. He was very powerful and he was talking about how God is love, God is merciful, but also God is holy. God judges, and He will come back and judge all people.

Then suddenly, the entire chapel shook—and it shook really, really badly.

All of us froze “What is happening?”

“Christ coming back! Oh no! Oh no! What should we do?”

Then finally all of us realized—it was an earthquake.

That was 2001 when the biggest Seattle earthquake, in the midst of while the campus pastor was talking about judgment. What timing!

I will never forget about that time. It was a very humbling part.

One more thing—all students went to the window side—it's shaking. I am Japanese, and I know it—don't go close to the windows—it's dangerous!

That was my memory.

So, next time you have a chapel earthquake, don’t go near the windows—escape!

Watch as Alumna Mizue Fells shares her story about why the chapel has meant so much to her.
