M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Provides Grant to the Science Department at 萌妹社区

Posted on Monday, January 06, 2014

Last semester, Dr. Tracie Delgado and students in her cell biology class enjoyed utilizing brand-new biotechnology equipment for the first time. Thanks to the grant of $70,500 from the  paired with the capital fund match from the NU Foundation, the 萌妹社区 College of Arts and Sciences could purchase $141,000 of much-needed research equipment that now supports both student and faculty research in biology and chemistry.

The main pieces of equipment obtained were a protein/DNA imaging machine, a fluorescent microscope, and research/student-grade UV spectrometers. “This is the latest technology available for these applications, and it is a privilege to have,” said Dr. Delgado.

How Does This Impact the NU Science Department?

Current biology and pre-med student Hannah Jacob shares that she and her classmates can now “visualize concepts we have studied in cell biology and truly cement what we have learned in class. It is one thing to learn about a recombinant plasmid, but to actually create one and view our efforts using the new equipment brings what we have learned full circle.”

Dr. Delgado explains that her students can now receive hands-on experience by learning modern-day science technology in the classroom. She adds, “This will make them more competitive for the job market, graduate school, or medical school.” It also provides them with the opportunity to do research in molecular biology, cancer biology, and virology that was not possible before.

Special Thanks to the Murdock Trust and NU Foundation

The College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Delgado, and her students expressed their utmost gratitude to both the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and the 萌妹社区 Foundation for their generous donations. “This financial support is key in developing and growing our program,” said Dr. Delgado.
